A Weekend In My Life • Durham

On the 11th November 2017, my best friend Grace and I boarded a train at 7.59am, armed with Starbucks and snacks, to Durham, to visit our best friend Anna at her University. I had been to Durham before but Grace had never so I was excited to go see all the sights again, since it had been a few years since I last went.

We got to Durham at 11.59am so the first thing we did was walk to Anna’s student house to dump our bags and to grab lunch since we hadn’t eaten since breakfast. Anna kindly supplied us with sandwiches and crisps so naturally I made a crisp sandwich and forced Grace to make one too.

After lunch, we decided to go for a walk to explore. What I love about Durham is the traditional vibe it gives off – it reminds me of Cambridge and Oxford in that way. The two main attractions in Durham are the castle and cathedral so naturally we had to walk up the hill to see them!

On Saturday night, we went out to dinner at a place called Tango. They did incredible burgers but unfortunately the lighting was quite dim so the photos didn’t do the food justice. We then headed to one of the student bars which was actually inside the castle – how cool is that?!?

The next morning we decided to go for brunch at an independent coffee shop called Treats. It was hidden up a narrow staircase which then opened up into a small room filled with wooden tables and chairs. I decided to order the vegan cooked breakfast which tasted incredible! I loved how they catered for all dietary requirements.

After lunch, it was time to head back to Anna’s to pick up our luggage and get the train back to London.

Overall, I had an incredible time in Durham and it was so nice to finally put a name to faces and see for myself places that Anna often mentioned in her letters to us. It was a fleeting visit so I’m sure we will definitely be back!

Check out Grace’s blog post here of the trip.
