Replying to My ‘Dear My 22 Year Old Self’ Letter

Dear Future Me,

Hi. It is currently the 2nd of January 2017 as I am writing this because yesterday was spent in the airport and on a plane back to London from New York!!! I can hardly believe it was real myself.

It has been a year since I flew back from New York City and still I cannot believe I went. It was horridly cold and snowy but it was also one of the best holidays I have ever had. I was at one of the lowest points I have ever been with regards to my mental health in December 2017 and the holiday was exactly what I needed to remind myself how much more to life there is than University, work and toxic friendships and relationships.

You decided not to set any official New Year’s Resolutions this year because the idea of not completing them made you anxious and that is not a good way to start the New Year. It fell on a Monday which would have been perfect but alas your mental health should always come first. However there are a few things I would like you to have done by this time next year.

Gotten into Fitness. At the moment the idea of going to the gym terrifies you because you think you will be surrounded by super fit people who will laugh at you. That is probably your social anxiety talking. You do not have to go to the gym, although maybe by this time next year you will have, but I want you to start getting into fitness and taking control over your body. You will be a Physiotherapist (hopefully) by the time you are reading this so you are in the prime job to be working out.

I have still not joined the gym although I am hoping to join within the next few weeks with my boyfriend now that I am living in one place with a full-time Monday to Friday job. However, I have continued to boulder ever since I was first introduced in October 2017, although not as often recently due to work, and my boyfriend and I even started the couch to 5k running programme.

Be eating healthier. And by this I do not mean eating salad for every meal but eating a balanced diet and making sure you get all your nutrients and eat enough calories. Not eating enough has been a concern as of late so I want to make sure that you are getting all the calories you need. If you are vegan, great, but if not, then I hope you are happy whatever you are eating.

My boyfriend loves cooking so I have been spoiled with homemade cooking for the past 9 months and most of it is vegan. I successfully managed to complete Veganuary this past January (with the exception of a slice of my birthday cake) and I definitely eat enough to satisfy myself.

Be happier. I know you have Depression but honestly, it has taken up 5 years of your life now and you cannot let it take any more. Go to more concerts, eat better food, go for a walk at midnight just because you want to. Do more things that make you happier and be more present in the moment. Start giving out more positive vibes and hopefully you will surround yourself with people of a similar mindset. You can beat this, I know it.

I am definitely in a better place now than I was in January 2018. I attribute this change in mental health to letting go of toxic friendships and relationships and connecting with new, positive-minded friends, finishing University and moving into a flat with my boyfriend that I love. I have money now that I have graduated and am working full-time so I can go to more concerts, eat out more often and buy myself Starbucks coffee more often and generally do more of what makes me happy.

Well wishes always,

  1. Oh I really like this !! I’ve always wanted to do one of these – ‘letter to my future self / letter to my 16 year old self / letter to my younger self’ because I feel like it’s right up my street but whenever I go to write one it’s like I forget everything I have to say, and then I think I freak myself out because there’s so much I could say that my mind goes blank and I panic that I’ll probably forget to include a lot of things and so on, so I never end up writing one. I really liked this, I like how you took chunks and responded to them in little sections rather than writing an overall letter to yourself back. Great post! xx

    1. Honestly, I have to be in the right mindset to write one as otherwise I cannot think of anything to write or be realistic. I have all these big ideas of what I want my life to be like and none of them are realistic. My best advice would be just to start and to work on it as often as you can. xx

  2. I really love this! I am currently writing one at the moment “to my 25 year old self” which is next year 😱. I think it’s so nice to read and even write! You have done so well, and glad you are happier 💖 xx

    1. When I was 20 years old, I wrote 3 letters to myself: one to my 21 year old self, one to my 25 year old self and one to my 30 year old self which are all in the shoebox at home. I am so excited to read them in the future and see where I hoped my life would be. I love writing the letters and having all these big goals for myself but honestly, I also feel so much pressure as I have such big aspirations that I will probably not achieve during the year. xx

      1. That’s so nice! And to have it on paper too so you can keep it and look back on it as well is nice 😊. I always feel the pressure too, but I look at it like at the time I wrote that letter I was a completely different person. So everything that happens from then to the age I wrote it for is different to how I imagine. Maybe life has different plans and so a goal might change because we change 😊 or maybe we just didn’t realise that a goal might take longer than we realise and that’s ok too 😊 xxx

    1. It is so important but also can be so overwhelming as there are so many ways to keep fit. But starting is always better than not starting, no matter your level.

  3. Omg I love this so so so much and I am so proud of you!!! You have achieved so much in a year and I beyond thrilled with how happier you are and how successful the past year has been so woo you go girly!!! xxxx
